This page offers the writings of local teacher and gonzo journalist Chip Mosher. He has been teaching in the Clark County School District for 19 years, and writing about education issues for 10 years. His weekly column, Socrates in Sodom, appears in Las Vegas CityLife. All reprints here appear by permission of CityLife. Click the link on this page to read the latest entry for Teachers4Change. And visit Lasvegascitylife.com to read his most recent column.
Mosher has been credited with raising test scores across the board in his at-risk school by 14 percent, before empowerment schools or merit pay. His latest evaluation was exemplary, with four 4s and the rest 3s (for those in the know). Although sometimes criticized for the occasional use of blue words in his column, Mosher views language as the only valid, legal weapon at his disposal with which to battle the forces of tyranny that have brutally and consistently kept teachers in their slavish position in Las Vegas. In reality, Mosher is a simple, quiet classroom teacher. But he credits those who have become the four main enemies of teachers in Clark County-- CCSD, the casino industry, the state Legislature and, sadly, the teachers own union CCEA-- with inspiring him to become a much better writer than he ever dreamed possible.
All views expressed herein are solely those of Mr. Mosher. He maintains that his is but one voice in the local academic wilderness. He encourages others to speak up loud and clear about the inequities of teaching here-- and to direct their commentary at the ongoing enemies of teachers, and consequently education, in Las Vegas.
Chip Mosher is a union member and also has written fiction and a CD of poetry, entitled America, Please! (available at Amazon.com).
